ePortfolio Review Process

Learn about the ePortfolio Review process for pharmacists in Ireland, including submission guidelines, notification procedures, and available supports from the Irish Institute of Pharmacy.

All registered pharmacists are required to undertake continuing professional development (CPD). PSI statutory rules (2015 and 2025) outline the CPD system for pharmacists in Ireland, including the requirement for pharmacists to maintain a record of CPD in an online ePortfolio and participate in ePortfolio Review annually.

ePortfolio Review overview

The Irish Institute of Pharmacy (IIOP) manages the annual ePortfolio Review process. During this process, pharmacists are asked to submit an extract from their ePortfolio to the IIOP.

Initial information on ePortfolio Review is sent by the PSI during the summer months to the email address a pharmacist has previously provided to the PSI. Following this, pharmacists can expect to receive further information by email from the IIOP. The IIOP will advise pharmacists about how they can submit their extracts, what type of extracts are sought for the review, and the submission deadline. The IIOP will also highlight the supports and tools that are available to assist pharmacists preparing to submit extracts from their ePortfolio. Further information and supports about CPD and the ePortfolio system are available from the IIOP website. Please also refer to the FAQ section on this website.

Changes to the ePortfolio Review process

Annual submission

With the introduction of changes under revised CPD rules in 2025, from January 2027 pharmacists are required to show evidence of their ongoing engagement with CPD by undertaking ePortfolio Review annually. This changes the arrangements previously in place which required a submission once every five years.

Link between engagement with CPD and continued registration

The amendments in 2025 to PSI Registration rules also introduce a direct link between engagement in CPD and a pharmacist’s continued registration so that the Council can propose to refuse an application for continued registration due to non-engagement with ePortfolio Review.

Eligibility

All registered pharmacists are required to engage in ePortfolio Review on an annual basis. However, pharmacists who are on the Register less than one year at the time of ePortfolio Review will not be required to participate in ePortfolio Review until the following year.

For ePortfolio Review 2026/27, any pharmacist who was registered with the PSI as of 1 January 2026 is considered eligible and will be required to submit an extract of their ePortfolio for review to the IIOP in January 2027, unless they have an approved PSI exemption application. This includes pharmacists who participated in (or had an approved extenuating circumstance for) ePortfolio Review 2025/26.

Pharmacists who have joined the register during 2026 will be eligible and expected to participate from ePortfolio Review 2027/28 onwards.

ePortfolio Review exemptions (previously called extenuating circumstances)

We understand situations arise where a pharmacist may not be able to undertake ePortfolio Review due to extenuating circumstances and an ePortfolio Review Exemption Policy is in place to provide for this.  More information on applying for an exemption can be found on this webpage.

Further information

All ePortfolio Review and CPD related communications are issued by email. Pharmacists are responsible for ensuring that the email addresses associated with their PSI and IIOP accounts are accurate and monitored regularly. Pharmacists can update their PSI email at any time in the PSI Registration Portal. For the IIOP, guidance on how to check and update your email address is available on the IIOP website

Please note that the PSI registration portal and IIOP portal are not connected and currently maintain separate contact records. Updating an email address in one system will not automatically update it in the other, so any changes should be made in both systems where applicable.

The guidelines that support ePortfolio Review are set out in the CPD Review Policy.
